Michael Holden > The Smith Tower, in Pioneer Square, Seattle after a rainstorm.

So everyone knows that The Smith Tower used to be the tallest building West of Chicago...for about 15 minutes. Things never really got much better for the building, A company that I worked for about a million years ago moved in and moved out. Now it looks like just about everyone else has moved out too. I heard that they were gonna turn it into condos and then realized that nobody is buying condos these days. And just a couple weeks ago it hit the block in a skyscraper foreclosure sale.

The best thing about the Smith Tower these days -- other than elevators operated by real humans instead of robots -- is that there is rumored to be a super-braniac uber-nerd girl that lives in the top pyramid part of the building. Like, the kind that might be a super-hero or something. I don't know if this is true but I like to believe that it is.

This image is an HDR vertical panorama: 21 captures total, in 3 sets of 7 exposures each ranging from 1/4th to 15 seconds at f7.1, ISO 200. Nikon D3 & 18-35mm lens at 18mm. I shot it right after a rain storm and everything was shiny. I didn't paint in any of the colors, they just needed to be coaxed out of the shadows.

Michael Holden > This was hard to shoot, but not because of the usual reasons. The stated was in a garden in a rural part of Washington state, and by necessity the garden was encircled by an electric fence to keep out the deer. Of course, I had my chihuahua with me. This fact was the subject of much ogling/leering by a couple of rather regal/reptile/lethal-looking bald eagles who were paying a lot of attention to Pixel, aka "lunch" and screeching out to all of their endangered home boys about their excellent fortune to have found such a fat little happy meal with no 'prey' instincts at all. So I stuffed him into my hoodie and set up my stuff to shoot this statue. Except the chihuahua wanted to pee on the fence, probably encouraged by the fox piss or panther urea they spray around there, again to freak out the deer. So, 180mm, between the zappy parts of the fence, with a frustrated dog digging at my belly trying to escape so he can get himself simultaneously electrocuted and eaten alive by our national bird. 7 frames, manual focus, f/2.8, in semi-rain, kneeling in the mud....and what song have I got stuck in my head? Yup: Ren & Stimpy's "Don't Wiz On THe Electric Fence!" -- Words to live by...especially if you are a chihuahua.

Michael Holden > Isamu Noguchi's sculpture "Black Sun" in Volunteer Park, Seattle

As far as I can tell, the lyrics to Soundgarden's song "Black Hole Sun" have nothing to do with Isamu Noguchi's sculpture "Black Sun" -- on any metaphorical, allegorical, or aesthetic level whatsoever. But then, we're talking about a band that's named after Doug Hollis's 1982 installation in Magnuson Park titled, unsurprisingly, "Sound Garden".

Everyone I know calls it "The Donut".

I shot this just before sunrise on a Saturday morning. Acording to my advanced calculations, full moon was going to set during the blue hour behind the space needle if you were standing on the steps of the Asian Art Museum and looking through the hole in the donut....so at 5 AM I went out with all by gear only to find a ton of low lying clouds on the horizon. Crap, stymied again. I shot it anyway and think that it turned out a little better than the last time.

One problem with this shot is that you can either get the sculpture in focus, or the space needle, or neither. So this is two 5-frame HDRs (one with the needle in focus, one with the sculpture in focus) and then masked and merged together. Each was exposed between .8 and 13 seconds at f4, ISO 200 using the 85mm 1.8 lens. The lights in Volunteer Park make everything look green for some reason, though to your eye they appear to be fairly amber.

The next time the moon will set behind the needle/Black Sun during the blue hour will be in 2015. I'll be back.

"wow....".

Michael Holden > When I was in high school my parents wrote books about wine, some of the first books about the emerging wine country in Washington and Oregon. They had an office three floors above The Central tavern on 1st Avenue. One summer, it was my job to ship the books out to the libraries/bookstores/reviewers who'd ordered them. I was rather unmotivated, to tell the truth, and in part it was because the books were not actually stored in the office, but rather in a storage space a couple blocks away, which one could access only by going down this sketchy alley, inevitably occupied by chronic inebriates, and then venturing deeper into a creepy basement that had clearly been around since before the big Seattle fire. It was dark, reeked of what I hoped was rat piss, and filled with spiders. And cases of books. I'd load the books onto a hand truck and walk them back over to the office and schlep 'em up three flights of stairs so I could pack them only to take the damn things back downstairs to the post office.

I didn't realize that this was *the* alley when I was shooting it, tho. I just liked the pretty lights.

Shot with the trusty D3, 7 frames total, exposed between 1/4 and 15 seconds, f7.1, Nikon 18-35mm at 18mm, ISO 200.

Michael Holden > ...is About to Eat Seattle. An uncommon view of Alexander Calder's 6-ton 40-foot long steel sculpture, "Eagle", at the Seattle Art Museum's Olympic Sculpture Park. Originally installed in Fort Worth, "Eagle" was moved to Seattle in the year 2000.

This image was created with a Nikon D3 capturing seven exposures exposures ranging from 1/80th to .8 of a second with the Tamron 14mm rectilinear lens at f6.3 at ISO 100. I like it because it turns the familiar form of Calder's iconic work into a weird ant-like or alien creature, intent on devouring the city where it has landed.

Michael Holden > This is an hdr photo of Alexander Calder's sculpture, Eagle, at the Olympic Sculpture Park on Elliott Bay in Seattle. It is comprised of five source images exposed between 1/10th and 1/160th of a second at f13.

I swear that I had never seen the Olympic Sculpture Park's website before taking this photo and honestly wasn't trying to rip off their idea....I was just in the park right after sunrise and saw the ferry on Elliott bay, saw the Eagle sculpture, and...well, the rest is obvious. If I'd really been thinking I would have framed it to capture the full moon, which was setting just to the right of the sculpture.

(Note: It really is spelled Elliott, not Eliot. Trust me. I'm a native.)
